The 2008 FNI International Conference will take place at Duke University, Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, one of the three cities that make up the Triangle, three closely inter-connected North Carolina cities: Raleigh, the state capital, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The Triangle is known for its universities and colleges (Duke University in Durham, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill), its high tech business park (the Research Triangle Park), and medicine. Parts of North Carolina are also popular tourist destinations, including the Great Smokey Mountain National Park and the state's beaches and coastal areas. Historic sites include New Bern (site of the first colonial capital), Old Salem in Winston-Salem, and the Biltmore House in Asheville.

Hotel Reservations
The primary hotel for the conference is the Millenium Hotel in Durham. It is
located about a half mile from campus with easy bus or shuttle connections to
the university.

The Millenium is a full service hotel with restaurant, bar, lounge, banquet facilities, etc. Conference participants will have a nightly room rate of $139.

Our second hotel is the Brookwood Inn. The Brookwood Inn is a budget hotel located one block from the Duke University Medical Center. The Brookwood is convenient to campus, but does not have the full services of the Millenium. The conference rate is $74 per night.

Air Travel Information
Durham and Duke University are served by Raleigh-Durham International Airport (http://www.rdu.com/). Several major airlines fly into RDU: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, US Airways. United Express connects RDU to United Airlines flights at other major airports. For transportation to Durham and your hotel you may arrange taxi service through the Raleigh Durham Airport Taxi Service (919-840-7277) or through one of the area shuttle bus or limousine services (see the RDU website for an up-to-date list of companies and telephone numbers.) All of the major rental car companies also serve RDU and the Triangle area.
Ground Travel Information
Durham is located at the intersections of two interstate highways: I-85, connecting Richmond, Va., and Atlanta, Georgia, and I-40, which connects Wilmington, North Carolina with Greensboro and points west. Driving south from Washington take I-95 south to Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia, and then I-85 south to Durham. If you are driving north from Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina, take I-85 north through Winston-Salem and Greensboro, North Carolina to Durham.
Travel Grants for Graduate Students
A limited number of travel grants are availible to help graduate students attend the 2008 FNI conference.
Applicants must demonstrate good standing in a graduate program in the disciplines represented by the conference and an established interest in research in early modern Germany.
Only a limited number of these grants are availible and (given eligibility and a creditable budget) will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.
